Follow the broad hat brim down through the long curls to the wide collar, then notice how he turns back to look at us.
The title names the young man as Nicolas Rubens, the painter’s son. The Art Institute catalogs the panel as attributed to Rubens, not as a certain work by him. He looks back over his shoulder, with long curls under a broad hat and a wide collar over a dark cloak. The panel came to the museum with the collection of Max and Leola Epstein.
