Landscape with Saint John on Patmos, Nicolas Poussin
Landscape with Saint John on Patmos, 1640

Nicolas Poussin

1594–1665 · Baroque · 6 works

Nicolas Poussin was born in France and spent most of his working life in Rome. Ancient sculpture, classical literature, and Renaissance painting helped shape the stories he painted for private patrons. His figures often seem carefully placed, with gestures that lead from one person to another. Landscape became equally important: trees, paths, water, and distant buildings organize a setting that can carry a mood or an idea. These pictures invite a slow reading of how human actions fit within a larger world.
