The Watermill with the Great Red Roof, Meindert Hobbema
The Watermill with the Great Red Roof, c. 1665

Meindert Hobbema

1638–1709 · Dutch Golden Age, Realism · 3 works

Meindert Hobbema, born in Amsterdam in 1638, was apprenticed in 1655 to the landscape painter Jacob van Ruisdael. He soon found a lighter manner of his own, painting woodland scenes with small figures, often in several versions, and watermills were a favorite motif. In 1668 he took a post as the city’s wine-gauger, and after that he painted far less.
