Find the horseman and his dog on the sunny road, then look up through the dark branches of the big tree to the clouds lit pink and white.
Hobbema signed and dated this large canvas in 1663, when he was about 25. A rider in a red coat passes a brick cottage under a towering tree, one of the small figures the National Gallery says he used to enliven his big woodland views. It came to the Art Institute of Chicago in 1922 as a bequest from Mrs. W. W. Kimball.
