Francisco de Zurbarán

1598–1664 · Baroque · 3 works

Francisco de Zurbarán was the leading painter in Seville between Velázquez’s move to Madrid in 1623 and Murillo’s rise in the 1650s. Shaped by the realism of Caravaggio and his followers, he painted mostly for Spanish religious orders, in a style both very direct and intensely spiritual. His last years went badly, and he died in Madrid in poverty.
