Count the tall hats, then follow the long spoon from the cook standing at the right to the hungry Punchinellos crouching at the left.
Punchinello, a tragicomic character of the Italian commedia dell’arte, is known by his tall conical hat and beaked mask. Here a group of Punchinellos cook gnocchi in a pot over a fire and taste them straight from a long spoon. Tiepolo’s son Domenico later devoted a whole series of 104 drawings to Punchinello’s life.
