Banana Plant and Chrysanthemum, Tsubaki Chinzan
Banana Plant and Chrysanthemum, c. 1845–54

Tsubaki Chinzan

1801–1854 · Japanese painting · 4 works

Tsubaki Chinzan brings plants close enough to compare their individual shapes. Broad banana leaves, loquat fruit, a sliced lotus root and a small bird appear in these works on paper. Restrained color sits alongside darker ink outlines, and inscriptions occupy the open areas of each composition. Compare the weight of a large leaf with the lighter marks used for petals, slender stems and feathers.
