Paul Klee

1879–1940 · The Blue Rider · 6 works

Paul Klee moved from Bern to Munich in 1906. He met the Blue Rider artists in 1911 and showed 17 works in their second exhibition in 1912. A trip to Tunisia with Macke in 1914 deepened his move toward color and abstraction. He kept working through army service, and in 1920 he was called to the Bauhaus.

This room starts at Murnau, where Gabriele Münter bought a house in 1909 and she and Kandinsky spent their summers, often with Jawlensky. In 1911 Kandinsky and Franz Marc started the Blue Rider, and August Macke and Paul Klee showed with them. Three works here come before the group began; Klee’s run on to 1920, after the war scattered it.
