Poetic Thoughts in a Forest Pavilion, Ming dynasty (1368–1644), c. 1371

Ni Zan

1301–1374 · Chinese painting: Liao and Yuan · 2 works

Ni Zan, one of the Four Masters of the late Yuan, was known for pale ink, dry brush and sparse trees. In 1366 he left his home to escape marauding troops and, even after the Ming was founded, lived as a wanderer, roaming lakes and mountains in a Daoist cap. Dong Qichang and Wang Yuanqi later painted in his manner.
