Mei Qing

1623–1697 · Chinese painting: Qing · 3 works

Mei Qing turns mountainous terrain into passages of ink that invite close looking. His view of Nine Dragon Pool makes the waterfall twist between rounded rock formations. Two smaller album leaves use trees, buildings and open water to lead the eye through different landscapes. Compare the dense marks that establish the foreground with the lighter areas that let the landscape recede.

Follow the waterfall’s curves, then look for a similarly winding route through the album landscapes.
