Find the figure seated in the small hut at the bottom, then look up through the snow-laden pines to the pale cliffs behind.
Mei Qing’s poem speaks of one cloud whitening a thousand cliffs while the green pines stay unaffected, and he notes that he followed the brush ideas of the old master Ma Yuan. The leaf comes from his 1690 album of landscapes in various styles after old masters. He knew Huangshan only in spring and summer, so this snowbound scene, the Cleveland Museum of Art points out, came from his imagination.
