Find the two boats in the middle of the lake, then look back to the empty pavilion under the willows on the left bank.
The inscription names the Stream of Wuling, setting of Tao Qian’s tale of the Peach Blossom Spring, in which a fisherman happens on a hidden village of hermits and can never find his way back. Zha Shibiao, who painted this album at sixty-eight, leaves out the usual signs of the story: the lone fisherman, the cave mouth, the village. Instead two men talk from separate boats on a wide lake.
