Édouard Manet
1832–1883 · Impressionism, Realism · 22 works
Manet combined direct observation with lessons from older painting, especially Spanish art. Strong contrasts and visible handling of paint unsettle expectations of a polished finish. His work helped open the way to Impressionism, although he continued to seek recognition at the official Salon.
