John Singer Sargent

1856–1925 · Impressionism, Realism · 31 works

John Singer Sargent made an international career from portraits that balance a convincing likeness with conspicuous pleasure in paint. Born in Florence to American parents, he trained in Paris and later settled in England. A sleeve or reflection might be described with a few sweeping strokes, while a face receives closer attention. His travels also produced watercolors and paintings of gardens, workers, and architecture. After reducing his portrait commissions in the early twentieth century, he devoted more time to these subjects and to large mural projects in the United States.
