Adolph Menzel

1815–1905 · 1 work

Adolph Menzel brings the viewer into a railway carriage after a long night. A sleeping man slumps beside a woman looking toward the morning light, while belongings fill the cramped space around them. Opaque watercolor, pastel and oil give fabrics, faces and reflected light different textures. The scene makes an ordinary journey feel closely observed.
