Katsushika Ōi
c. 1800–after 1857 · Ukiyo-e · 1 work
Katsushika Ōi was a painter of Japan’s Edo period and a collaborator with her father, Katsushika Hokusai. Her surviving paintings show a distinctive command of color and dramatic lighting. Night scenes use contrasts of illumination and shadow, while Operating on Guan Yu’s Arm stages an episode from the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. The calm figure at its center contrasts with the alarm of his attendants. Her life dates remain uncertain; Cleveland records them as about 1800 to after 1857.
