Gustave Courbet
1819–1877 · Realism · 19 works
Courbet challenged artistic convention by giving ordinary people and familiar places the scale and seriousness of grand painting. A central figure in French Realism, he treated direct experience as the basis of art. His landscapes bring that attention to the physical character of rocks, water and terrain.
