Follow the pale trunks upward into the reddish canopy, then look for the small strip of distant sky beyond the trees.
Warm foliage fills most of this woodland view, while pale tree trunks create a series of upright accents. Courbet leaves relatively little sky visible. The painting’s depth comes from overlapping trees and the slope of the ground, inviting us to look through the woods rather than over them.
