Guercino

1591–1666 · Baroque · 6 works

Giovanni Francesco Barbieri was called Guercino for his pronounced squint. Born at Cento, near Bologna, and largely self-taught, he joined the strong light and shade of Caravaggio to a softness of his own. In 1621 he was invited to Rome to work for Pope Gregory XV, and after Guido Reni’s death he became the leading painter in Bologna.

Italian painters from the 1620s to the 1660s. Artemisia Gentileschi, the century’s most celebrated woman painter, worked across Italy and in London. Guido Reni, in his lifetime the most famous painter in Italy, ran a busy studio in Bologna, where Guercino became the leading painter after Reni’s death. The unconventional Salvator Rosa painted wild landscapes and allegories.
