Frans Hals
1582/83–1666 · Dutch Golden Age · 3 works
Frans Hals spent most of his career in Haarlem, painting individual sitters, families, civic groups, and scenes of everyday life. His portraits can feel caught in the middle of an encounter: a turned head, a hand on a chair, or a mouth about to move gives a figure a lively presence. Visible brushstrokes contribute to that effect. Passages that look loose at close range come together at a distance as fabric, skin, or expression, making the act of painting part of the image’s energy.
