Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness, c. 1622

Diego Velázquez

1599–1660 · Baroque · 3 works

Diego Velázquez of Seville was apprenticed at eleven to the painter Francisco Pacheco and soon surpassed him, taking up the dark, dramatic light of Caravaggio. In 1623 his portrait of the young Philip IV so pleased the king that he made Velázquez a court painter in Madrid, where he served the king for the rest of his life.
