Choe Seok-hwan
Active first half of 19th century · Korean painting · 1 work
Choe Seok-hwan carries a grapevine across eight screen panels, changing the weight and tone of the ink as it turns. Leaves, tendrils and bunches of fruit gather into an arrangement that suggests wind and movement. Cleveland describes the composition as a response to Korea’s stormy summer season. The open spaces between the branches keep the vine legible even as it curves across the entire screen.
