Angelica Kauffmann
1741–1807 · Neoclassicism · 7 works
Angelica Kauffmann developed an international career in portraiture and history painting, moving between Italy and England. She became one of the two women among the founding members of London’s Royal Academy in 1768. Stories from literature and classical antiquity supplied subjects for her paintings, while portraits connected her with patrons across Europe. Looking at these two parts of her work together reveals how a gesture, a costume, or the arrangement of figures can turn an individual likeness into a larger story.
