Amedeo Modigliani

1884–1920 · School of Paris · 10 works

Amedeo Modigliani was born in Livorno, Italy, in 1884 and moved to Paris in 1906. From 1911 to 1913 he worked almost only on sculpture, then gave up carving and painted portraits of friends, partners and dealers. Long faces, long necks and almond eyes became his mark. He died in Paris in January 1920, aged 35.

Two artists in two cities, in the same decade. In Paris, Amedeo Modigliani painted the artists, dealers and partners around him with long faces and almond eyes. In Berlin, Käthe Kollwitz made prints of her own face, before and after her son Peter was killed in 1914. Compare how each builds a face from line and tone.
