Look for the halo scratched above his turban, the fly whisk in his hand and the pair of shoes standing beside him.
Shah Jahan ruled the Mughal Empire from 1628 to 1658. Rembrandt drew him as one of twenty-three studies after Indian paintings, probably from an album then in Holland, and the model for this sheet is now at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna. He enlivened the stiff, formal original with fine pen lines, brown washes and a halo scratched out of the costly Japanese paper.
