See how the worn stone and wood of the window frame him like a picture within the picture, then find the vine leaves and the leaded glass above his hat.
A man in a tall hat leans on a window ledge, tankard in hand, and grins at us. The Art Institute of Chicago credits Adriaen van Ostade with making small pictures of drinkers and smokers at windows a Dutch favorite. The same vine and leaded glass appear in his little paintings of women at windows, so he may have planned some of them as pairs.
