Find the row of thin young trees near the middle, then compare their straight dark trunks with the curve of the path that sweeps away beside them.
Mondrian signed this sheet, dated it '05 and wrote the place, Loosduinen, under his name. At the time he was a landscape painter, making about fifty landscapes a year between 1897 and 1907. In 1905 the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam held a large Van Gogh show, and the Cleveland Museum of Art sees that painter in the thin bare trees, the low horizon and the lone peasant.
