Count the butterflies around the bouquet, then compare the crisp red flowers with the softer shapes that fade into the background.
A tall brown vase holds a loose bouquet of red, pink, white and blue flowers against a pale, mottled background. Butterflies drift around the bouquet, and some petals and leaves seem to float free of it. Redon painted it in oil in 1905, and it came to the Art Institute as a gift of Mary and Leigh Block.
