Compare the farm with its upside-down copy in the water, then follow the bare branches overhead as they knot into a net of curving lines.
The Art Institute dates this canvas to about 1916. Mondrian had first sketched the farm around 1905, and nine of the twenty known paintings and drawings of it were made during the First World War, after he had seen Cubist paintings by Braque and Picasso in 1911. His wartime buyers mostly preferred his earlier, more natural views, which is likely why he came back to the subject.
