Follow the two thin trunks in the middle from the green field up into the dark leaves, and find the strip of pink light behind them.
This field lies near Oele, a hamlet in the east of the Netherlands where Mondrian spent the summer of 1907. He painted it in oil on paper, with young trees standing dark against a twilight sky. The Cleveland Museum of Art reads the mood as an early sign of the spiritual search that later led him to drop every recognizable thing for pure geometry.
