Find the white puppy at lower right, drawn with only a thin outline, then look up at the sparrows flying above it.
Puppies were a famous subject of Rosetsu’s teacher, Maruyama Ōkyo, and the Minneapolis Institute of Art credits Rosetsu himself with an uncanny understanding of animals. In this panel a white puppy is drawn with nothing but a fine outline on the bare paper, while sparrows dart overhead and one perches on a bamboo pole. Chrysanthemums reach in from the lower left, and another pale circle marks an old door pull.
