Look at how loosely and quickly the white dress is painted, then find the rose in her hand and the peacock’s tail spilling down at the right.
Lawrence portrayed Catherine Grey, Lady Manners, an Irish poet, as Juno, queen of the Roman gods, whose peacock perches on the balustrade. She turned the picture down, finding it unflattering. He showed it at the Royal Academy’s exhibition of 1794, the year he became a member, and offered it for sale, yet the Cleveland Museum of Art records that it was still his when he died.
