Compare the clearly placed eyes and mouth with the looser strokes of the hat, sleeves, and dark background.
In this 1892 portrait, Morisot concentrates attention on a pale face framed by a broad hat and dark surroundings. The hand resting on the chair gives the sitter a place in the room, while much of the dress remains lightly described. The painting rewards noticing which details are clarified and which are left open.
