Compare the carefully placed features and clasped hands with the loose blue strokes surrounding the child’s head and shoulders.
A boy from Mézy modeled for this pastel in 1890, when Morisot rented a house there with her husband. It is a study for a full-length painting of Saint John the Baptist holding a cross. Here the close view concentrates on the child; the cross belongs to the larger composition.
