Find the full moon glowing through the mist, then the small red trees on the dark peaks and the autumn flowers along the bottom edge.
This is the left scroll of Yukinobu’s triptych, an autumn night with a full moon over misty peaks. Kano painters were trained in Chinese ink styles, but by the 1600s they also learned the delicate manner of the Tosa school, used for Japanese subjects. The Cleveland Museum of Art notes how Yukinobu laid a delicate range of colors over the tones of ink, colors that help tell one season from another.
