Follow the rider in green from the lower left up the path to the gate, then look into the open room where the woman sits.
The Tale of the Heike tells of the war between the Taira and Minamoto clans in the late 1100s. In one episode the emperor sends Minamoto no Nakakuni to find Lady Kogō, and here he rides up a path to a thatched house where a woman plays the koto. Japanese hanging scrolls often came in sets of three, with a figure scene in the middle; in this set the center lies between a spring day and an autumn night.
