Pick out the travelers on the green street, then follow the line of birds over the trees to the castle and the poem above it.

Hiroshige designed more than one series on the stations of the Tōkaidō. This smaller set of about 1837 to 1842 is known as the Tōkaidō with Poem, and its views carry a kyōka, a comic verse, written in the sky. At Hamamatsu travelers in wide straw hats lead packhorses and carry a palanquin along the main street, while a castle rises on its stone walls above the roofs.
