Let your eye run up the tall, narrow black shapes of the coats, then into the sharp white cuts of the feathers and the slanting lines behind them.
The Brücke broke up in 1913, and from 1913 to 1915 Kirchner painted a series of Berlin street scenes that MoMA counts among the high points of his career. This woodcut of 1914 shares their subject: five women in long dark coats and feathered hats, standing close together on a city street. At the right edge a spoked wheel cuts into the scene.
