William Holman Hunt

1827–1910 · 5 works

William Holman Hunt joined the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood with the ambition of giving familiar subjects a renewed seriousness. Close observation and carefully chosen details helped connect visible things with religious or moral questions. A scene can seem ordinary at first, then become more complicated as the objects and gestures begin to relate to one another. His work also moved between painting and printmaking. The frontispiece he made for the group’s magazine, The Germ, brings that interest in meaningful images into a small printed format intended to accompany writing.
