Dante Gabriel Rossetti
1828–1882 · 4 works
Dante Gabriel Rossetti worked as a painter, poet, illustrator, and translator. His interest in Italian poetry and medieval stories helped shape the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which he formed with fellow artists in London. Alongside elaborate literary subjects, he made drawings of people close to him. The graphite portrait of Elizabeth Siddal offers a quieter encounter with his work than a crowded narrative painting. Attention shifts to the angle of a head, the pressure of a line, and the way a face emerges from areas of softened graphite.
