Landscape after Wang Meng, Wang Shimin
Landscape after Wang Meng, Qing dynasty (1644–1911), 1664

Wang Shimin

1592–1680 · Chinese painting: Qing · 2 works

Wang Shimin approached landscape painting through sustained study of earlier masters. For him, working in another painter’s manner offered a way to build a new composition from inherited brush techniques and forms. He became an important figure among the painters known as the Four Wangs in early Qing China. In Landscape after Wang Meng, the title announces this conversation across generations. Looking closely means attending to how repeated marks build mountains, trees, and movement across the paper, as well as recognizing what the landscape depicts.

Choose a small cluster of brushstrokes and follow where a similar pattern appears again. How does repetition connect different parts of the landscape?
