Tōshūsai Sharaku

Active 1794–95 · Ukiyo-e · 13 works

Tōshūsai Sharaku’s recorded printmaking career lasted only from 1794 to 1795, yet his actor portraits remain unusually direct encounters. His first designs presented large heads against dark, sparkling mica grounds, isolating the performer’s face and hands. Exaggerated features describe both a theatrical role and the person playing it, while later designs include full-length figures. All his known designs were issued by the publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. The artist’s identity remains unresolved, so the most reliable starting point is the work itself: look for tension in a mouth, brow, or sharply bent finger.

Look at the mouth and hands in an actor portrait. Do their expressions reinforce one another, or pull in different directions?
