Tintoretto
1518/19–1594 · High Renaissance and Mannerism · 3 works
Jacopo Robusti took the name Tintoretto from his father’s trade as a dyer, tintore in Italian. He worked almost all his life in Venice, painting large stories on canvas full of dramatic light and gesture, and hoped to join Titian’s color to the energetic forms of Michelangelo. After Titian’s death he and Veronese led painting in the city.
