Robert Henri
1865–1929 · Realism · 3 works
Robert Henri encouraged artists to make work from the life around them. As a painter and influential teacher, he helped younger artists pursue subjects beyond the conventions of official exhibitions. Portraiture became a major part of his own practice, with sitters drawn from different communities and walks of life. He valued a direct encounter with the person in front of him. In Young Woman in Black, the restrained title leaves attention on the individual, inviting a close look at posture, expression, and the handling of paint.
