Hans Holbein the Younger, born in Augsburg and taught by his father, was one of the most accomplished portraitists of the 1500s. He worked in Basel, making woodcuts, fresco designs and panels, then went to England in 1526 with a recommendation from the scholar Erasmus. He settled there in 1532 and portrayed the Tudor court until his death in 1543.
