Federico Barocci
c. 1535–1612 · High Renaissance and Mannerism · 8 works
Federico Barocci developed paintings through extensive drawing, testing figures, expressions, and the arrangement of a scene before completing it. He worked with chalk, pastel, and other materials, using color during preparation as well as in the finished painting. His religious subjects often depended on familiar bodily gestures that made a story approachable. The studies shown here reveal that process at a smaller scale: a child’s head or a turning figure becomes a problem to explore. They let us follow decisions usually hidden inside a finished composition.
