Find the small riders crossing the snowy shore near the bridge at the bottom, then the boats on the grey water and the inscriptions across the sky.
This leaf comes from Tani Bunchō’s set of the Eight Views of Xiao-Xiang. The theme began in Chinese poems and paintings and traveled to Korea and Japan; the views picture the misty banks of the Xiang River in southern China, whose shifting scenery was likened to changing moods. Bunchō painted the album in 1788, and its leaves were later remounted as hanging scrolls; the Cleveland Museum of Art owns four of the eight.
