Find the tiny figures climbing the path up the headland toward the pines, then look past the trees to the boats sailing on the open water.
By the 1500s, visits to scenic and historic sites in the lower Yangzi delta had created a market for printed travel books, and painted views of local scenery flourished. This leaf from Song Xu’s album shows Yutai, or Jade Terrace, Peak, one of the sites around Lake Tai. The Cleveland Museum of Art suggests that such albums served their owners as keepsakes, as travel guides, or for “armchair travel” in the mind.
