Trace the channels from the small boat at the lower left past the village among the willows, then across the green fields to the hills.
About 1588 Song Xu painted eighteen views of famous places in and around Wuxing, today’s Huzhou, and wrote a note on each like an entry in a local gazetteer. Not a native of Wuxing, he must have visited it after accepting the commission. His note at the upper right tells the reader that Lake Tai is only a few li, or Chinese miles, to the east, and that past Xiangshan, a few li north, one crosses into Yixing.
