Look at the dark face of the stack against the yellow sky, then follow the warmer light scattered across the thawing field.
In this version of Monet’s wheat-stack motif, sunset changes the relationship between the dark mass and the field around it. Fifteen paintings from the group were exhibited together in Paris in 1891. Seeing them side by side made their differences in season and light central to the experience.
